House and Senate leaders gathered to honor law enforcement officers with a Congressional Gold Medal for their efforts in defending the U.S. Capitol when it was under attack on January 6, 2021. Members of the U.S. Capitol police; the Washington D.C., Metropolitan Police Department; and others attended the ceremony held in the Capitol Rotunda. The ceremony occurred on the same day as the New York Times reported that the special committee investigating the attack would be issuing criminal referrals to the Justice Department. close
