General William Westmoreland, Commander-in-Chief in Vietnam from 1964-68, spoke to a conference about the Vietnam War. In his remarks entitled, “America’s international stature in the 1990s: the results of sacrifice by our citizen soldiers,” he focused on the important role played by the military in safeguarding the principles of democracy at home and abroad and in making the United States the leading power in the world. He also talked about the continuing role of the military in such instances as the Persian Gulf and Haiti in the post-Cold War world. close
