On March 2, 1989, a joint session of Congress was held in the House of Representatives chamber of the Capitol to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first meeting of Congress in New York City. Leaders from both parties spoke about the important milestone and remembered some of the first laws enacted by the new American legislature. Poet Laureate Howard Nemerov and historian David McCullough also spoke. close
