Atsushi Oi from the Japanese International Trade & Industry Ministry talked about why the two trading partners failed to reach an agreement last month. He brought up the issues of purchase quotas for auto parts, excessive regulation of the car industry and opening international markets. The U.S. recently announced tariffs for imported Japanese luxury cars. Japan believes this unilateral action violates the rules of the World Trade Organization, or WTO. Both countries have now asked the WTO to resolve their dispute. close
