House Appropriations Subcommittee members heard testimony concerning the safety of automobile air bags. The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration recently introduced several new safety requirements for air bags after reports showed they are dangerous to small children and women. The witnesses stressed that air bags are important safety devices, but that they can also be improved and that these actions by the federal government are necessary until the auto industry makes the necessary improvements in air bag technology.
