Committee members heard continuing testimony from Ambassador Madeline Albright, President Bill Clinton’s Secretary of State nominee. Questions focused on the president’s and her views on a variety of problem areas and general foreign policy goals and methods, specifically on differences between |the Clinton administration and many Republican senators over |several issues, including U.S. back payments owed to the United Nations, U.S. Bosnia policy and the role of economic sanctions in diplomacy. She also stressed the need for increased funding for foreign operations to accomplish U.S. foreign policy objectives. During the first forty-five minutes of this portion, some of the committee members' microphones were malfunctioning, so the committee took a brief recess for the problem to be corrected. close
