Senate Transportation Committee members heard testimony from federal highway safety officials, automobile industry representatives and consumer advocates concerning ways to reduce the threat of air bags to children and small women. They testified about making less powerful air bags and allowing air bags to be deactivated in the near future, as well as more discretionary air bags in the future. Several committee members accused federal agencies of moving too slow in effecting immediate, intermediate actions, which was costing the lives of children. close
