Committee members heard testimony concerning the safety and feasibility of continuing U.S. participation in joint Mir-shuttle operations. Several NASA officials defended the use of Mir, which although designed to last five years is now eleven years old. They stated that the information and experience gathered by U.S. participation in the program, especially through U.S. astronauts on board Mir, are important in preparations and procedures for the new international space station. NASA and the Russian space agency plan to keep Mir in orbit until 1999 until the new international space station is launched into orbit. Mr. Oberg provided criticized Russian safety procedures and Ms. Smith testified about the history and goals of the joint program. close
