President Bill Clinton warmly welcomed Chinese President Zemin Jiang to the White House. Both presidents walked down the South Lawn and stood on a dais to review troops and speak to the assembled crowd. President Clinton urged closer ties between the two powerful nations and reminded China of American concerns about human rights. Both leaders described a “new era” in U.S.-China relations. After a 21-gun salute President Jiang said he welcomed the opportunity to “bring our relationship (to) a new era of development.” close
