As commander in chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, George Washington recruited untrained colonial forces for six years until the surrender of the British in October 1781. After presiding over the Constitutional Convention, General Washington received 100 percent of the electoral votes in the nation’s first presidential election in 1788 and was re-elected unanimously in 1792.

His presidency set precedents for years to come, such as delivering an inaugural address and establishing a Cabinet. He chose the republican title of “Mr. President” over more pompous alternatives that were suggested. Perhaps his most significant precedent was his decision to step down after two terms, allowing for the peaceful transition of power.

After leaving the presidency, Washington retired with his wife Martha to Mount Vernon, their beloved Virginia estate. On December 12, 1799, Washington set out on horseback in the cold and sleet to tour his property. He fell ill with a fever and sore throat. Despite the best medical intervention of the time, George Washington died two days later at age 67. He and Martha Washington are both buried on the grounds at Mount Vernon.
