Donald Trump was an atypical candidate for the presidency, a businessman with no prior military or political experience. Born to a family in real estate, Trump attended the New York Military Academy and graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He began his own career in real estate development in New York City in the 1970s.

Colorful and controversial, Trump became a well-known entrepreneur before cementing his celebrity on reality TV in the 2000s. In 2005, he married Slovenian-born model Melania Trump. She is his third wife and the mother of his youngest child.

As the GOP’s nominee for president in 2016, Trump defied pundits and polls to clinch an Electoral College victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton. Through much of his presidency, the nation enjoyed substantial economic growth, but his time in office also was marked by turmoil.

In December 2019, he was impeached by the Democrat-led House of Representatives for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate acquitted him on both counts in early 2020. Weeks later, the COVID-19 pandemic upended life, bringing unprecedented challenges for the nation and the Trump presidency, claiming 400,000 U.S. lives during his time in office.

After losing his 2020 re-election bid to former Vice President Joe Biden, and contesting the results during the ensuing weeks, he made history as the first president to be impeached twice, this time on a charge of inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

After leaving the White House, the Trumps moved to Palm Beach, Florida, where his private golf club Mar-a-Lago serves as their primary residence.
