Harris Funeral Homes, Inc. v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a case on whether federal civil rights law protects against transgender employment discrimination. This case comes out of Michigan. Aimee Stephens served as the funeral director for R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes. Throughout her time at the company, Stephens presented as a man. According to Stephens, after she told the company that she was going to "live and work full-time as a woman," she was terminated. Stephens filed a complaint with the EEOC alleging termination based on sex discrimination. After an EEOC investigation, the agency filed suit against the funeral home. The two cases come from Georgia and New York. In 2013 Gerald Bostock, a gay child welfare services coordinator for Clayton Co., Georgia was allegedly let go for "conduct unbecoming of its employees." After his termination he filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and filed suit against the county. He and his legal team argued that the county violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that protects Bostock from discrimination because of his sexual orientation.
