The Supreme Court in a landmark decision ruled 6-3 that it is illegal for employers to fire a person for being gay or transgender. The court heard oral argument in R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes, Inc. v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a case on whether federal civil rights law protects against transgender employment discrimination. This case comes out of Michigan. Aimee Stephens served as the funeral director for R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes. Throughout her time at the company, Stephens presented as a man. According to Stephens, after she told the company that she was going to "live and work full-time as a woman," she was terminated. Stephens filed a complaint with the EEOC alleging termination based on sex discrimination. After an EEOC investigation, the agency filed suit against the funeral home. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled in favor of Stephens.
