The House passed, 232-183, a resolution to remove the deadline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The measure now goes to the Senate. Congress approved the ERA in 1972. Thirty-five states ratified it by 1978 (needs 38), one year before the deadline. However, five states rescinded their ratification by then. Congress extended the deadline to 1982. Nothing changed before that deadline. Since then, three more states approved ratification, including Virginia which became the 38th state in January of this year.
