This first televised session of the British House of Commons features debate over the governmental agenda outlined in the Queen’s speech. (See State Opening of Parliament, ID:10012) After hearing complimentary speeches to the Queen, Labor leader Neil Kinnock and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher deliver their speeches, lasting roughly 40 and 50 minutes respectively. Their speeches are interspersed with lively debate arising when they yield the floor for questions. Also, Liberal Democrat Paddy Ashdown speaks for his party. Brief and insightful commentary is intermittently provided by British producer Michael Cockerell. close
