President Clinton spoke to an annual conference of current and former state attorneys general. He spoke about the progress of the legal and political struggle against the tobacco industry, and the remaining challenges to gain congressional approval of a settlement which secures public health, especially for young people. He thanked the attorneys general for their efforts to bring tobacco industry practices to light and urged them to support his five main principles in his effort to obtain congressional passage for the settlement. close
