Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) spoke about public concerns about governmental inefficiency and the ethics of elected officials. He stated that Congress has instituted reforms in how the federal government operates, but that there are still many challenges in this area, most fundamentally to reform the modus operandi for federal agencies. He also said that individual political leaders must ponder how they can improve public perceptions of them because in coming crises, leaders will need more confidence from citizens to preserve the nation. This was part of a symposium examining a recent study by the Pew Center for People and the Press about public confidence in government. close
