After their meeting, President Bill Clinton and President Nelson Mandela held a joint news conference outside President Mandela’s office building. They stressed the importance of U.S.-South African trade relations and other bilateral efforts to bring peace and prosperity to Africa. Mandela stated his high respect for President Clinton’s judgement in foreign policy matters but also pledged to continue to support nations such as Libya and Cuba which supported the struggle against apartheid. close
