President Bill Clinton spoke at Goree Island in Dakar, Senegal, from where an estimated 2 million slaves were shipped to the British colonies in America in the 17th and 18th centuries. He recognized the struggles of African-Americans for equality and praised recent African efforts toward peace and democracy. He also pledged U.S. support for further efforts.
