Surrounded by his economic advisers, the president announced a 4.7 percent unemployment rate for the first quarter of 1998 and said that U.S. economic performance was due to his administration’s economic proposal. He criticized the Senate budget resolution for not spending enough on education and other programs and the House transportation funding legislation which surpasses previously agreed upon budget caps. He also touched on the forthcoming Tobacco Legislation and the state of the Japanese economy. close
