The committee concluded hearings on the nomination of Anthony M. Kennedy to be associate justice of the Supreme Court. Michael Martinez (President, National Hispanic Bar Association) and Antonia Hernandez (President and General Counsel, Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund) did not formally oppose the nomination but have some doubts about Judge Kennedy’s civil rights positions. Perdue, a former law partner of Judge Kennedy’s, and Elizabeth Kepley (Director of Legislative Affairs, Concerned Women for America) testified that he is open-minded and has deep respect for values. Nathaniel Colley (Colley, Lindsey & Colley), a lawyer and long-time friend of Judge Kennedy’s, stated that the nominee is a fair man who wishes the best for all groups. close
