Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Georgia) announced that he had sent a letter to House Agriculture Committee chairman Smith pledging support for the sale of U.S. produce internationally. He deplored the use of economic sanctions against countries such as India, saying that these sanctions hurt only U.S. farmers. Chairman Smith and the bipartisan group of Agriculture Committee members talked about agriculture legislation to be introduced in Congress and about Most Favored Nation status for China.
