Witnesses testified about the repression of human rights in China. Rep. Smith described the recent crackdown on dissidents in China and that that President Clinton did not mention this human rights problem in his letter to the Chinese government. The committee members discussed what should be done to improve the situation in China in reference to the persecution of the Chinese people. Mr. Jingsheng explained that if the human rights problems are dealt with in China, the human rights problems in smaller Asian countries may improve as well. Some of the Chinese witnesses had a loud disagreement after the conclusion of the hearing and the chairman called for order in the hearing room. close
