The Senate continued the impeachment trial of President Clinton with the first day of presentations by the president’s defense team. Mr. Ruff argued that the articles represented a rush to judgment by the House and countered the House managers' charges by emphasizing inconsistencies in the grand jury testimony. In addressing the issue of witnesses he said they were not necessary but asked the Senate if they really wanted to call Linda Tripp to “explore her motivations.” Towards the end of his presentation, he became emotional when he talked about his father’s military service in World War II. close
