Undersecretary Pickering testified about potentially sending ground forces to the Kosovo region of Yugoslavia as part of a NATO peace-keeping mission. He told the committee that such action may be required because “NATO’s credibility as the guarantor of peace in Europe (was) at stake.” Several members opposed any direct U.S. involvement, noting that similar actions in Bosnia were still underway despite promises to end U.S. involvement after one year. close
