Scholars discussed the historical importance of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. Professor Miller talked about President Lincoln as an interpreter of moral meaning, with emphasis on ideas such as central government and racial equality. Professor Rawley talked about Lincoln’s vision of a union of individuals. Professor McCoy talked about the declining influence of classical education during Lincoln’s time, comparing Lincoln’s background with that of President Jefferson. However, he said that Lincoln’s love of the classics provided many of the same ideas of government and individualism as those of Jefferson. Following comments by Mr. Prokopowicz, the speakers answered questions from the audience. close
