Turkey Unveiled: A History of Modern Turkey
Ms. Pope talked about her book Turkey Unveiled: A History of Modern Turkey, published by Overlook Press, which described the growth of the modern Turkish state in the aftermath of World War I, when the empire, defeated by the Allies, splintered into 30 independent states. The book shows how the postwar state tried to curb the growth of Islamic fundamentalism and tried to introduce some measure of democracy into a formerly autocratic system. close
