Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Foreign ministers from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Poland signed documents which admitted the countries as members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The signing marked the end of centuries of foreign domination for the countries and was hailed by nationalists in their respective countries as a symbol of new-found sovereignty. close
