Attorney General Reno testified that she favored letting the independent counsel statute expire despite the fact that she favored the statute in 1993. She said that she did not agree with plans by some Democrats to cut off funding for existing independent counsels but assured the committee that the Justice Department could fairly investigate any current or future allegations. She was followed by a panel of former independent counsels and attorneys who discussed alternatives to the statute. close
