The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs talked about the ramifications of revoking or renewing China’s most favored nation status. Subcommittee Chairman Steven Solarz recognized there are strong arguments for both actions and spoke about the effect the decision will have on the promotion of democracy and human rights in China. Witnesses representing human rights advocacy groups cited human rights abuses by China and recommended sanctions and removal of MFN status as the appropriate course of action. Former U.S. Ambassador to China Winston Lord favored MFN renewal now with subsequent renewals dependent on China’s improvement in the area of human rights. close
