Ms. Biskupic talked about the Court’s recent 5-4 decision in U.S. v. Eichman which reaffirmed that flag-burning is protected by the First Amendment as free speech. Also discussed was Perpich v. Defense Department, which involved the governor of Minnesota’s attempts to keep his state’s National Guard from participating in military exercises in Central America. The Court unanimously decided that the Federal government does have the right to send National Guard troops out of state for training. In Michigan v. Sitz, the Court decided 6-3 that sobriety checkpoints are constitutional. close
