The American Sociological Association sponsored a forum on turning points in the Middle East that led to the current crisis. The panelists listed an absence of democracy and socioeconomic disparity as reasons for the conflict, as well as nationalism and ultra orthodoxy. They also discussed the deconstruction of Palestine and creation of Israel, the Six Day War and invasion of Lebanon, and the Iranian Fundamentalist Revolution and subsequent war with Iraq as catalysts for the current crisis. close
