President George H.W. Bush and President of South Africa Frederik W. de Klerk discussed their Monday morning meeting. This was the first visit to the United States by a South African leader since 1945. Upon the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in February 1990, President Bush called Mr. Mandela and President de Klerk and invited both to the U.S. Mr. Mandela, Chairman of the African National Congress party, visited the U.S. in June. close
