The subcommittee conducted a hearing to review the status of the 1990 census. The census numbers are used to apportion congressional districts and to provide statistics to assist in planning by state and local officials. Only 63 percent of the census bureau questionnaires were returned this year. The subcommittee examined the effectiveness of the U.S. Census Bureau efforts and began investigating allegations of data falsification by census workers. close
