In a speech from the floor of the Senate, Senator Bob Smith, Republican from New Hampshire, abandoned his career-long affiliation with the Republican Party because, he said, it was not conservative enough. In the speech he criticized colleagues for failing to stand by party platform planks which defended the right to own guns, opposed abortion, and opposed the deployment of U.S. troops under international commanders. He also said he would seek a new independent party affiliation and had not given up his bid for the presidency in 2000. close
