Michael Reynolds talked about Hemingway’s life from the release of For Whom the Bell Tolls on the eve of the Second World War until his suicide in 1961, describing Hemingway’s bouts with depression, his fourth marriage and divorce, and his time as a volunteer in Cuba.

This was the keynote address of the Hemingway Centennial Conference, held in Hemingway’s birthplace of Oak Park, Ill. Michael Reynolds is the author of Hemingway: the Final Years, published by W.W. Norton. He spoke at Oak Park River Forest High School, which Earnest Hemingway attended, for a celebration of Ernest Hemingway’s 100th birthday. close
