Carl Albert’s career as a U.S. representative spanned 30 years and won him the eventual distinction of speaker of the House from 1971-1977. He began his legislative career as a Democratic representative from Oklahoma. During his term he interacted with a number of political leaders and commented on the many changes seen throughout the decades during which he served. Many of Mr. Albert’s comments were about the Watergate scandal and how the House handled the charges brought against President Richard M. Nixon and his administration. Mr. Albert said that his main accomplishments have been his continual support of major civil rights and education bills. He explained his concern for the current national government and outlined several of the major issues that the Congress faces. close
