Participants talked about President Boris Yeltsin’s recent decision to dismiss Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin and replace him with Vladimir Putin. They termed Yeltsin’s rule as an “elected monarchy” and said that recent shake-ups in the Kremlin were instigated to protect his family from corruption charges. They also talked about shifting alliances within the body politic and security threats from rebel forces in Dagestan. After their remarks they answered questions from the audience. close
