The Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing on U.S. Persian Gulf Policy. Testimony centered around U.S. troop deployment in Saudi Arabia and suggestions that a military draft should be instituted. Former Navy Secretary Webb stated that “proper planning for a ground offensive should include an immediate call for the draft.” Richard Perle, former assistant secretary of Internationa Security Affairs at the Department of Defense, does not believe that United Nations sanctions against Iraq will force a withdrawal from Kuwait. close
