Experts in Iraqi affairs testified on the importance of economic sanctions as well as on the regional issues involved in the current conflict. Each answered various questions concerning the effectiveness of sanctions and the effects of negotiated settlements. They gave detailed evidence as to the effect of sanctions on the Iraqi economy and military, and whether the economic sanctions would ultimately force the Iraqis to withdraw from Kuwait. The experts also discussed the effect of war on the people and the role of Arab nationalism and Islamic fundamentalism in the crisis and in the future of the region. close
