In separate standup news conferences, House Republican leaders announced that their officers had been re-elected for the 102nd Congress. Rep. Lewis was returned to the chairmanship of the House Republican Conference after a challenge by Carl Pursell. Rep. Guy Vander Jagt of Michigan was elected chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, the party’s congressional campaign arm. This post was bitterly contested by Rep. Don Sundquist, a moderate from Tennessee, who, among other complaints, felt that Rep. Gingrich of Louisiana was too influential in the campaign committee. The elections follow several weeks of public feuding in the party. Rep. Michel ran unopposed for minority leader as did Rep. Gingrich for minority whip. close
