Mr. Stevens testified that Sen. DeConcini asked him two weeks ago to submit a sworn statement detrimental to Sen. McCain because Sen. McCain was receiving special treatment from the Ethics Committee. Mr. Stevens told the committee that Sen. McCain had taken airline flights totaling over $16,000 and had not seen any evidence that the senator intended to repay American Continental. Sen. McCain reimbursed American Continental for the flights saying the failure to repay had been due to an oversight. Mr. Stevens is the first business associate of Charles Keating, owner of Lincoln Savings and Loan, to testify. close
