Governors released a report on the future of U.S. education and announced the formation of an investigative panel on the efficacy of state and local education reform. The report found that several goals established in 1989 for the year 2000 had not been met. These goals included a 90 percent graduation rate, universal adult literacy, and basic competence in core subjects. They said they planned to hold hearings to address the failures. After their comments they answered questions from reporters. close
