The U.S. Conference of Mayors issued its annual report on hunger and homelessness. The survey was a result of a poll of thirty cities and found an increasingly negative and intolerant attitude towards the poor. Almost all the cities reported that despite expanding their programs, they fell short of the growing demands. The mayors' analysis of the survey focused on the public perception and gaps in public policy. They cited the survey to refute the public’s perception that most of the poor choose to be hungry and homeless. The survey demonstrated that one quarter of the homeless are employed. Another quarter are people that the mayors believed that the U.S. had a responsibility to take better care of: veterans. They also believe that we have a responsibility to care for the many mentally ill who are on the streets because of decreasing funds and changing policies for mental institutions. close
