Chairman William Kennard announced that the Federal Communications Commission had granted Bell Atlantic permission to offer long distance telephone service to its customers. It is the first regional telephone company to be allowed to offer long distance service. The chairman said that this decision was an effort to allow greater consumer choice, as mandated by the Telecommunications Act of 1996. After his prepared remarks he responded to questions from the media. close
