The congressmen spoke to reporters after meeting with President George HW Bush to discuss the congressional delegation’s trip to the Middle East. Mr. Beilenson said that he found American troops in Saudi Arabia to be prepared for military conflict, contradicting the remarks made by Lieutenant General Calvin Waller, deputy commander of the American forces in the Persian Gulf. Lieutenant General Waller said on December 19 that the United States would not be ready to fight by January 15, the deadline set by the United Nations for an Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait. close
