The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution that named the occupied West Bank “Palestinian territories” and criticized Israel for having recently deported four Palestinians. The United States joined the other members of the U.N. Security Council in supporting the resolution despite having attempted to avoid a split from Israel. The United States supported the resolution because it was stated in terms that required no change in American policy toward Israel. The United States vote avoided angering Arab allies in the Persian Gulf with support of Israel; however, the United States desired to make it clear that its vote in no way represented appeasement of the Palestinians in order to maintain support for the United States policy in the Persian Gulf. American Jewish organizations reacted angrily to the United States' vote, accusing the U.S. of unfairly singling out Israel in order to maintain its coalition of Arab allies in its fight against Iraq. close
