Mr. Williams announced that El Salvador rebels shot down a United States helicopter while it was on a routine mission in rural El Salvador. Mr. Williams also said that while the helicopter was reportedly able to land “in a controlled fashion,” the three U.S. airmen in the helicopter were found dead with gunshot wounds to the head, suggesting that they were executed by the rebels. The incident took place shortly before President Bush was expected to announce whether he is going to reinstate $42.5 million in aid to El Salvador that had been frozen by Congress since 1989. close
