Author David Satter talked about his book Darkness at Dawn: The Rise of the Russian Criminal State, published by Yale University Press. He talked about the rise of the Russian oligarchy following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Mr. Satter argued that this small, but influential, class of economic and political elites have significantly corrupted the transition from totalitarian communism to democratic capitalism in Russia. He also argued that the 1999 terrorist bombings that were officially blamed on Chechen rebels and that laid the groundwork for the second Russian-Chechen war, were actually orchestrated by Russia’s Federal Security Service in an attempt to gain political support for Vladimir Putin.
