Participants gathered at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where in 1965 the civil rights movement gained national attention when white law enforcement officers used physical force to prevent voting-rights marchers from crossing the bridge. Several participants spoke about the events of that day and about the current state of race relations. President Bill Clinton used the opportunity to call for greater racial equality. After his remarks, the crowd crossed the bridge together. close
